Entrepreneurial mums on the increase

15% of UK mums have already started their own business, and a further one in 10 aspire to do the same.  A survey of 1,286 mums by BT Business via Netmums website suggests that ‘mumpreneurs’ have the potential to become a greater entrepreneurial force during this decade.  62% of mums surveyed said choosing the hours they work was the reason they wanted to start-up their own venture, while 50% wanted a better work/life balance and 38% said they liked the idea of being their own boss.

Of the 128 respondents aspiring to start a business, a third said they wanted to run a company from home and would choose their living room, spare bedroom or kitchen as the preferred place to get their start-ups off the ground. 44% of respondents felt that the emergence of online social networks has created more opportunities for women in business today, and a quarter will focus their efforts on selling goods or services purely online.

The research shows that the increasing availability of Broadband and relatively low entry costs have made setting up a micro-business a possibility for many, with the recession providing an extra push to explore business ideas.
