Business Planning

A Business Plan is exactly what is says it is: a plan of your business!

West Midlands Womens Business Centre business advisorIt’s nothing to be scared about, but you will need to put down on paper everything you plan for your business. And it doesn’t matter what stage of your business you are at. It’s a working document and even if you have one, then it’s worth revising it.

First, work through all the detail of what your business is going to do or what it is already doing, what the product or service looks like, who your competition is and how the money stacks up.

Once you’ve done this, you will be able to see where the gaps are; perhaps there are parts of the business that you’re not particularly interested in or not very good at or you need to be careful about as you grow.

You’re passionate about your product or service but haven’t thought carefully enough about what your competition is and whether you can make any money. It’s like a CV of your business and, like a CV, it should be short, informative and up-to-date.

By the end of this module you will have completed many parts of the Business Plan and it will give you a document that you can take, for example, to your bank manager for a loan. It will also give you a really valuable record of your first thoughts about your business as well as a plan to follow for starting-up or growing.

It’s much easier following a plan than just acting randomly. You should know your market inside out before you embark on start-up or growth.
