Alex Dowman : The Chemical Galaxy

I have trained as a Personal Assistant in 2001, so most of my previous jobs have been in the office type environment. Now that I am a stay-at-home mother, I was looking for something which I could do at my own pace which would fit in with family life.

I did not have any experience of starting up a business what so ever, I didn’t have the skills to develop a website nor did I know how to market the business in the best way. Not knowing anything, I phoned the government Business Link help number and they referred the Women’s Business Development Agency to me.

“WBDA made it so much easier to set up my business by talking me through the procedures, explained legal obligations I had to fulfil and gave me clear explanations on complicated issues such as VAT etc,” said Alex, “It made me sit down and think through a proper business plan!”

Now I have launched my own business called The Chemical Galaxy. It is a retail of products bearing the 'chemical galaxy' design e.g. computer mouse mats, mugs, posters etc which is only available online for the time being. The Chemical Galaxy is a new vision of the periodic table of elements designed by my father.

After having my one to one business advice sessions with my business advisor, Joy Hunter, I have more confidence in myself. I have been given support and guidance which was very useful to help me start up my business!
