Lucy Smith has provided the inspiration for Pretty Pottery. Find out how she found assistance to enable her to set up the business...

Since I left school I have always worked in the banking industry but then I was made redundant whilst pregnant with my first child, so I decided to start researching on how to start up my own business.

Lucy Smith - West Midlands Women's Business CentreAnd this is when I came across WBDA’s new website –  www.wmwomensbusinesscentre.com – which great for doing online training, it has loads of useful resources and many networking opportunities.

I then attended one of WBDA’s 4 day ‘Women’s Enterprise Programme’ in Coventry - which was fantastic; it was full of things to help me with marketing, all the finance and legal issues and business management.

Help from a WBDA business advisor

After that I was assigned to Joy Hunter, my business advisor, who gave me some very valuable feedback to improve all aspects of my business. Plus she broke everything down into “plain” English making it less scary and less intimidating starting up my business. This helped me to build up my confidence levels which enabled me to pursue my dream!

I did have a few barriers starting up though, like having two children, no experience and little resources but having WBDA and my wonderful husband supporting me this has all been possible. Now I have my very own business up and running which has come alive!
