Sylwia runs professional photography studio taking fashion and beauty photographs: find out how she set it all up...

I came across one of WBDA’s leaflets about how they had helped a woman set up her own business – which was an ironing service. So I started to think about my idea for business more seriously. I thought that if she could do it, then so could I.

Until now photography has just been my passion - so I also needed to develop my photography skills as a professional photographer.

Help with setting up the business

So I called WBDA because I just didn’t know where to even begin and needed help and got booked to see a business advisor. Thanks to my advisor, Christina, and WBDA I now had access to information and training which helped me to prepare to starting trading and it helped me to feel confident about setting up my own business.

From the beginning I was serious about what I wanted to do. I got so much help and support from Christina and so much encouragement that my idea is a good and steady one for business! Thanks to WBDA, I also met people who have been in a similar boat to me about starting up a business and it made me feel a bit more optimistic about my business.

WBDA also provided me with professional support to putting my business plan together, sales and marketing advice, access to finance, a guide to setting up a business, information about tax, NI, feedback about my marketing materials, access to Networking clubs and lots of training.

At the beginning I thought that I would open a small photography studio at home but I decided to look for a retail premises in town because thanks to Christina’s help and by doing my market research I was convinced that my business can develop faster when I start trading from a business property.

So now I have launched my own business in photography called sylviaR! My customers can choose from: photos for bride’s lingerie as a wedding-night gift for the groom, fashion and beauty photography, couples and family photos, parents to be and babies. I am also hoping to create and sell photo gift cards and photos on canvas.

Now photography is not only an idea or a dream but it’s my own company! I just started and I have more customers than I expected – it really does help when you have support and advice from the beginning to get everything right and then you can go from there!

This has been one of the best experiences I have ever had. I have met great people and now have my own company and my dreams about photography have come true!!!
