My name is Kate, I am 27 years old and I have been a lecturer in photography for the past 5 years.

I started teaching as soon as I left university and literally through myself into my job. Though I got so much satisfaction from seeing my students develop their own skills I found it very hard to ever have the time to try and continue my own personal work.

Because of this I began to stop enjoying a subject that I have been so involved in for over half my life. In the early part of 2008 I found myself suffering from work related stress and realised that the only way I could improve my health was to take back control of my workload.

This is when I decided to set up a new business and as if this wasn’t enough work I was also getting married within a month of this decision!

I found WBDA through the Business Link website and felt that choosing a female oriented support network would suit me the best. I felt that a large part of my business profile was to do with being female in what is predominately a male industry and I felt that because of this WBDA would be best suited to help me.

Setting up the business

When I first thought about starting the business I was really overwhelmed by all of the information I had to sort through. I chose to start up with a friend as I didn’t feel I had the confidence to work alone. Unfortunately the partnership didn’t last through the start up stages and this came with several problems such as lack of communication between parties and ownership of materials.

I received a variety of valuable support from WBDA through 1 to 1 meetings, communication via email and over the telephone as well as having access to extensive resources via the WBDA website. The support ranged from helping to write a successful business plan to ordering the workload so that the most important tasks were approached early on.

Joy, my business advisor, has been so supportive through all of the stages of the business start up. She has made the path so clear and navigated me through all of the information that I originally found so daunting. When the original partnership broke down, Joy remained supportive to both parties offering unbiased advice to help both of us move on. She helped us break down some of the original barriers, which made it easier to resolve some of the outstanding issues. Joy has also been so positive throughout the whole process and made me feel at all times that the venture was a good idea and that it had lots of potential as a business.

I was so excited about the launch date which was on November 3rd and I can’t wait to actually get out there and start working on my business which is called Depict.

Depict is a photography company specialising in portraiture. Depict offer wedding packages and family portraits as well as documenting corporate events. Depict also offer training for individuals and groups wanting to improve their photography skills. This takes the form of 1 day workshops to several week short courses run through colleges and galleries.

There is also the opportunity for commissioned work to be carried out for clients wanting something more specific than the main packages offered. This may include artwork for offices, homes or businesses or books that document family member’s lives or specific events.

I have become far more confident about running my own business thanks to the positive support I have received from Joy. Being able to talk to someone who has an insight into how to set up a business has been so beneficial and by receiving such positive comments during each meeting I have gone away each time feeling more confident and buoyant about the start- up.
