"WBDA gave me the confidence and support to start out and it was really good knowing I could get information and help when I needed it. I now realise that the potential for growth is available when I want to expand."
Dawn Culverwell : Dawn Culverwell Independent First Assistant
‘Dawn Culverwell - Independent First Assistant’ is about assisting surgeons for all operations where an assistant is required. Find out how Dawn Culverwell turned her skills into a business…
I am originally from South Africa and have lived in the UK for about 10 years now. I have trained as a General Registered Nurse, Midwife and Theatre Nurse in South Africa.
I now specialised in theatre and especially in assisting surgeons here in the UK. I realised I was doing loads and loads of assisting due to the nature of the hospital I was working for and decided I needed to get out and set up my own business in order to help reduce my hours of working for someone else!
Business support from the Women’s Business Development Agency
I did not have the confidence to go out and set up on my own, so my niece, who works for WBDA, encouraged me to have a business advice session to help me get on the right track and start the business properly.
Joy Hunter, my business advisor, provided me with guidance as to how to go about setting up all of the areas of a business i.e. invoices and data
About Dawn Culverwell – Independent First Assistant
I have now set up my own business where I assist surgeons, on a freelance basis, for all operations where an assistant is required. I travel to different hospital sites around Coventry and Warwickshire as required by the surgeons.
