My name is Gladys; I am a qualified nurse and have worked in old people’s nursing homes for sometime now. After working in the old people’s nursing homes I have realised how much I can contribute in helping the elderly for longer at the homes so I thought what best than to start my own business and provide a quality service!

What happened next?

My main motivation to start my own business came as a result of seeing the fact that a lot is said about what people’s centred approach is to care but in reality its not properly achieved and I would like to demonstrate that it can be done. So I got in touch with the Women’s Business Development Agency because a friend, who recently set up her own business with the help of the Women’s Business Development Agency, recommended them for help, support and guidance through all the steps to starting up.

WBDA set up one-to-one business advice sessions with my business mentor, Minal Sodha, who helped me through everything! Minal helped me to rebuild my confidence; she helped me with all the information to get links to the right people in the commissioning team who I needed to speak to in order to get my business started! She was always there to talk to when I needed and provided constant encouragement and guidance.

About GDM Health Care Ltd

GDM Health Care Ltd is a day service for older people with dementia. I run these services from a day centre in Coventry and also carry out some outreach programmes.

Looking ahead

Thanks to the help I have received from Minal, myself and my business get stronger everyday! I have satisfied customers and I am running my business without fear as I have my confidence back.

I at the moment I am so happy to have Minal helping me all the way and I can’t ask for more. It’s like I have a “shoulder to lean on when the going gets tough.”
