What top tips would you give to other women thinking about starting a business?
"Speak to WBDA and go for it!"
Elaine Little from First Aid 4 All
I am a registered nurse with a nursing degree and 30 years of experience in nursing
and first aid. I have worked within NHS services, community services, children’s services, special needs and adult services. I began first aid training young people in schools and colleges whilst I was a school nurse.
I am a very active sports person with my main sport interest being rock climbing and mountaineering (qualified with SPA. BCU level 1 coach and MLC trained). I enthusiastically enjoy sharing my nursing/ first aid experiences, whilst developing skills for others through lifelong learning.
Turning my passion into my business
I retired from nursing in 2008 and thought I could still share my knowledge and skills into first aid training.
I lacked confidence and needed to learn new skills for running a business so I decided to search for some help and support on how to start up my own business. I came across the Women’s Business Development Agency and got in touch to book one-to-one business advice sessions.
Sheridan Culverwell, my business advisor, thoroughly explained each step of producing a business plan. It was great to have a pleasant, friendly voice on the phone or only an email away helps to expel worries and concerns. It really helped to be able to ask for advice no matter how small or great and by doing this I feel that it has enabled me to see the business way of thinking ahead now.
I was also able to take advantage of the free business workshops, as well as, the West Midlands Women’s Business Centre website which has loads of useful factsheets, templates and tips which were really useful to me!
I am now a more confident, enthusiastic person and have really enjoyed the process from seeing my idea of first aid training to seeing First Aid 4 All in print and action!
