Top tip to women thinking about starting their own business

"Don’t go at it alone, make contact with WBDA, they are invaluable."

Eve Uhlig: Toto-Self Discovery

I’m the middle of three children, all girls. Middle children are said to be ‘survivors’ and I certainly believe I’ve weathered my fair share of ups and downs in life. This has led me, at middle age, to want to make use of my learning from these experiences and encourage others to make more positive choices in their lives.

My search for solutions has involved reading countless personal development books, attending workshops across Europe and undertaking all manor of activities to ‘grow’ myself- including completing a degree whilst working full time. One of the booked I always found myself returning to when seeking answers was ‘Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway®’, written by Susan Jeffers PhD.

My dream becoming reality

I have long wanted to feel I was making a contribution to the world and a positive impact on people’s lives. Having spent considerable time finding my way out of negative or unwanted situations and experiencing the incredible power resulting from using the ‘Feel the Fear’ tools, I believed others could benefit from my experiences. To achieve this I needed the freedom of self employment.

Eve Uhlig from Toto-Self Discovery set up her business with the help from WBDAI felt rather lost and confused about how to set up and run a business, so I contacted the Women’s Business Development Agency’s office and talked to Margaret, WBDA’s administrator, about my ideas and she suggested attending the ‘Planning for Your Business’ workshop that they run. The workshops I have attended have been excellent, not only in increasing my knowledge, but also improving my confidence. This is also an excellent opportunity to meet other business women undergoing the same adventure. From there I was offered an appointment with a business adviser.

I am so grateful to have the support of a superb business advisor, Michelle Grindley. Without her support to create my business plan, especially the financial aspects, I would certainly have given up. She provided one to one support sessions, provided additional information provided about how to find out about creating a website which has been invaluable, as has all the information and forums available on the West Midlands Women’s Business Centre website. If I’ve had a question, the staff has always been polite, helpful and positive.

Additionally, they have provided support and momentum to ‘keep me going’ at times when my enthusiasm was flagging. I feel much more positive, I didn’t feel alone. I know there were people I could contact if I had a question – however silly it might seem to me. It made my business a reality and turned me into a business woman to be reckoned with.

As a result from the support and guidance from WBDA I’m up and running – so thank you very much!
