Marla Nelson: Enterprise Solutions (MN)

I have over 8 years experience of managing and delivering public sector funded women’s enterprise initiatives. My experience has included managing WBDA’s Regional Women’s Enterprise Unit which was a project part funded by AWM and European Funding.  My most recent experience has been gained as Director of WECOE, and as a result has significant practical and strategic experience directly related to the Women’s Enterprise sector.

I am also an author and co-author of practitioner based Women’s Enterprise research papers.  I have regularly consulted and shared best practice on female entrepreneurship issues in the UK, raising awareness and increasing knowledge about this sector on an international basis. 

I have got a post-grad diploma in Marketing and over 17 years’ experience of developing strategic marketing campaigns for both the private and non-profit sectors.

My Motivation

I am facing redundancy post December 2009.  Owing to the current economic climate, there are relatively few full-time employment based posts available. I therefore made a decision to start Enterprise Solutions (MN) and in the first instance to submit a proposal to AWM in response to the recent tender call, whilst also securing other sub-contracting opportunities for project & service design & management, policy development, developing of strategic networks and collaborative approaches, etc in relation to the Enterprise Support / Economic Development Agenda; with particular expertise in the areas of Diversity. 

A helping hand from the Women’s Business Development Agency

From my previous roles I was aware of what was required to start my business.  Due to the economic climate, it gave me the push to make go solo. I got in touch with WBDA just to go over my business plan and see if I was going in the right direction. I received one to one business advice sessions and also the confidence to go at it alone and set up by myself. WBDA fully understood and met all my needs! They also made me think about going for bigger projects and stretching my own skills further.
